Welcome to the Library Media Center
The Library Media Services Department has adopted the national mission of the American Association of School Librarians which is
“…to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information.”
Library Media Specialists carry out this mission by
“…empower[ing] students to be: critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, purposeful users of technology, creative collaborators, effective communicators and ethical users of information.”
The Library Media Services Department supports and promotes the mission of the West Hartford Public Schools by providing the instruction, resources and services necessary for students and staff to become lifelong learners in a global community.
The library media center is open during the school day for book selection and for student projects. Our curriculum supports the classroom curriculum and the development of 21st century library media skills. All K-5 classes meet for regularly scheduled literacy and technology classes. Classroom teachers may also sign up for flexible lab and library time.
The library media center has a diverse collection that serves over 350 students and staff. The Destiny online library catalog provides home and school access to the digital and print collection. Students also have access to a variety of digital resources both at home and school.
In addition to our media center computer lab, students have access to iPads, Chromebooks and/or laptops for classroom use. An iPad cart in the library is available for use both in and outside of the library. In addition, the library utilizes two Smartboards and a document cameras for multi-media library lessons.
